Inelastic collapse of three particles.
A system of three particles undergoing inelastic collisions in arbitrary spatial dimensions is studied with the aim of establishing the domain of ‘‘inelastic collapse’’—an infinite number of collisions which take place in a finite time. Analytic and simulation results show that for a sufficiently small restitution coefficient, 0r7430.072, collapse can occur. In one dimension, such a collap...
متن کاملInelastic collapse and near-wall localization of randomly accelerated particles.
Inelastic collapse of stochastic trajectories of a randomly accelerated particle moving in half-space z>0 has been discovered by McKean [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 2, 227 (1963)] and then independently rediscovered by Cornell et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1142 (1998)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.81.1142]. The essence of this phenomenon is that the particle arrives at the wall at z=0 with zero vel...
متن کاملEquilibrium of a confined, randomly accelerated, inelastic particle: is there inelastic collapse?
We consider the one-dimensional motion of a particle randomly accelerated by Gaussian white noise on the line segment 0<x<1. The reflections of the particle from the boundaries at x=0 and 1 are inelastic, with velocities just after and before reflection related by v(f) =-r v(i). Cornell et al. have predicted that the particle undergoes inelastic collapse for r< r(c) = e(-pi/sqrt[3]) =0.163, com...
متن کاملInelastic light scattering by large structured particles.
Autocorrelation functions are computed for nonspherical particles whose dimensions are comparable to or greater than the wavelength of scattered light. Particular attention is given to models of motile microorganisms. Results for Gaussian ellipsoids, finite thin rods, ellipsoids with internal structures, and dumbbell-shaped scatterers are derived and compared.
متن کاملDetection of Inelastic Collapse in 3-D Shear Flow
Inelastic collapse has been observed in a wide range of granular simulations. Very little work, however, has been done in the area of detection of inelastic collapse in couette flow hard sphere simulations. Only recently has the occurrence of inelastic collapse been investigated for such systems. That work has shown that the probability of detecting inelastic collapse increases with a decrease ...
